"I'm back! Are you ready for a Professor Calfior trivia question? What was the name of JFK International originally?_________________________ (20 pts). One more! What was the name of the stadium where the New York Mets used to play?_______________________ (20 pts) Well, this is it! It looks gooey outside, so we will be in the clouds throughout most of this flight. But nighttime is sort of an instrument intensive kind of fight anyway, even if you can see the pretty lights on the ground. So this will continue to expand your wings, so to speak, in a pilot skill form and fashion. Ready for ATIS? It's on 127.05 for all departures, and that's what we be!"
Instruments:
1) Tune COM to "127.05" (ATIS)
"LA GUARDIA INTERNATIONAL, INFORMATION WHISKEY, 2300 ZULU WEATHER, SKY 500 BROKEN, 1000 OVERCAST, RAIN IN ALL QUADRANTS. VISIBILITY TWO MILES, TEMPERATURE 67, WIND 140 AT 11. ALTIMETER 29.82. RUNWAY 13 IS THE ACTIVE RUNWAY FOR ALL DEPARTURES. ADVISE ON INITIAL CONTACT YOU HAVE INFORMATION WHISKEY."
"Maybe we'll be able to pop out of the top of this thing - maybe not! No thunderstorms are present, so we'll be safe, unless you go below 60 knots on final.' This is going to be the grand slam fight of all your flights so far! Work on setting up your instruments before we put our IFR clearance on request, and taxi to the runup."
2) Set "Altimeter" and "DG"
3) Tune NAV 1 to "113.1" (LGA)
4) Set NAV 1 OBS to "056" in the upper window
5) Tune NAV 2 to "116.6" (CMK)
6) Set NAV 2 OBS to "170" in the upper window
7) Set the DME to "NAV 1" and "DIST"
8) Check CARB HEAT is "OFF" and GEAR "DOWN"
9) Turn STROBE "ON" and LIGHTS "ON"
"The red light on our left wing and the green light on our right wing helps other traffic in the air and on the ground to know what our orientation is. Another thing you'll notice is that this airplane will sound a whole bunch quieter in the night when flying. There's just something I can't explain about it, but it's real peaceful and quiet. I think a large percentage of molecules in the air go to sleep at night, so they can't screech as we tickle them going by!"
10) Tune COM to "121.7" (La Guardia Ground)
You:
"LA GUARDIA GROUND, CESSNA 13MIKE IS AT THE RAMP, READY TO TAXI WITH INFORMATION WHISKEY. I'D LIKE TO PLACE MY IFR CLEARANCE ON REQUEST."
La Guardia Ground:
"CESSNA 13MIKE, TAXI TO RUNWAY 13. HOLD SHORT OF RUNWAY 4. YOUR CLEARANCE IS ON REQUEST."
You:
"13MIKE, WILL HOLD SHORT OF RUNWAY 4."
TAXI -
"Runway 13 is to your back. Make a right turn and taxi to the runup area of runway 13. Remember, don't go crossing runway 4 until Ground clears us across. Another thing 1 love about the nighttime is the blue taxiway lights. Gives an airport a certain pizzazz!"
See Figure 12.1
Figure 12.1. Taxi to runway 13.
La Guardia Ground:
"CESSNA 13MIKE, CROSS RUNWAY 4 FOR 13. ADVISE WHEN READY TO COPY CLEARANCE."
You:
"13MIKE, CLEARED TO CROSS."
"Let's go through the runup first, and then once the airplane is taken care of, we have plenty of time to get our IFR clearance before going for it! Sound good? Well, it is!"
RUN UP -
1) Set brake (hold down to prevent aircraft from moving)
2) Advance power to about "1700" RPM
** 3) Select CARB HEAT "ON", record RPM drop (5 pts)
4) Select CARB HEAT "OFF"
** 5) Select "LEFT" Mag, record RPM drop __________(5 pts)
6) Select "BOTH" Mags
** 7) Select "RIGHT" Mag, record RPM drop ______________(5 pts)
8) Select "BOTH" Mags and reduce power to idle
9) Set FLAPS to first notch (10 degrees takeoff configuration)
"Get your piece of paper ready to copy down your clearance. It's always good to build that habit, because sometimes they come back with some of the most disconcerting changes possible! So work on getting it fully on the first reading, and you'll end up impressing yourself as well as everybody else within range!"
You:
"LA GUARDIA GROUND, CESSNA 13MIKE IS READY TO COPY CLEARANCE."
La Guardia Ground:
"CESSNA 13MIKE IS CLEARED TO THE KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT VIA THE LA GUARDIA THREE DEPARTURE - WHITESTONE CLIMB. EXPECT RADAR VECTORS IN ACCORDANCE TO YOUR FILED TRAINING ROUTE AFTER YOUR DEPARTURE. DEPARTURE CONTROL FREQUENCY IS 120.4. SQUAWK 5316."
You:
"LA GUARDIA GROUND, CESSNA 13MIKE IS CLEARED TO KENNEDY, WHITESTONE CLIMB, LA GUARDIA THREE DEPARTURE. RADAR VECTORS AFTER DEPARTURE. 120.4 DEPARTURE CONTROL - SQUAWK 5316."
La Guardia Ground:
"13MIKE, READ BACK IS CORRECT. SWITCH TO TOWER AT YOUR CONVENIENCE FOR TAKEOFF CLEARANCE."
10) Set XPDR to" 5316" (IFR code)
11) Tune COM to "118.7" (La Guardia Tower)
"Good going! Now this is a training flight, as you're well aware of. Normally, we go pretty direct to Kennedy without messing around flying towards Carmel VOR and Babylon NDB, but it's a round robin style of exercise which ATC is always more than willing to accommodate! So we will be doing this by the seat of our pants as we go, and we can change anything we want to as long as it doesn't conflict with the existing traffic's safety concerns. I'm ready to go! If you are, then we are ready to go, and let's let Tower in on our secret that we're ready to go!!!"
You:
"LA GUARDIA TOWER, CESSNA 13MIKE IS HOLDING SHORT OF RUNWAY 13, READY FOR TAKEOFF, IFR CLEARANCE."
La Guardia Tower:
"CESSNA 13MIKE, YOU ARE CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF. IMMEDIATE RIGHT TURN APPROVED AS PER LA GUARDIA THREE DEPARTURE OR AT PILOT'S DISCRETION. CONTACT DEPARTURE CONTROL WHEN ADVISED."
You:
"13MIKE IS CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF. THANKS."
