What better introduction to the New York area than the lady herself? Standing in New York Harbor on Liberty Island, she's a regal 151 feet high including her torch. (But alas!--in real life the torch is in her right hand.)

The Statue of Liberty was designed by Gustave Eiffel, who also created the Eiffel Tower (which we'll see later in our travels). She was a gift to the U.S. from the people of France, commemorating the first centennial of United States independence. The book in her hand is inscribed "July 4, 1776." Can you believe the U.S. Congress instituted a national lottery in that very same year so long ago? What goes around comes around.
