Flights of 13MIKE
by Fred J. Calfior and Douglas W. Miller
Flight Scenario Eight |
Kankakee to Chicago Meigs Field |
(Chicago Area - estimated flying time 30 minutes)
Professor Miller here! Kankakee? Kankakee? Isn't there a song about Kankakee? I always wondered where that city was. Well, now we all know, don't we? The fourth and last flight of this series departs Greater Kankakee Airport and arrives at Chicago Meigs Field along the southern shoreline of Lake Michigan. It may be flown as the last flight of this series or as a complete self contained flight. If you are continuing on with Professor Calfior, you may skip the "SETUP" section. If this is your first flight with "13MIKE", let me tell you how we do the setup. I will lead you through the initial setup phase of the flight simulator where you will set the aircraft type, winds, and position. I will show you how to save this setup so you may return to the Kankakee Airport without going through the initial setup steps. I will then turn you over to Professor Calfior who will take you through the PREFLIGHT of "13MIKE" to set your instruments, TAXI, and perform a RUN UP of the engine prior to takeoff. He will instruct you in the TAKEOFF, CLIMB OUT, LEVEL OFF, COURSE CHANGES, DESCENT, APPROACH, and LANDING procedures that make up the bulk of this scenario. Please listen to what Professor Calfior has to say about flying techniques. He is trying to help you obtain the best possible score.
FLIGHT PLAN -
The route of flight follows well established departure, climb, cruise, descent, and landing procedures. The procedures begin with a departure from runway 34 at Greater Kankakee Airport, with a climb out to 3500 feet. You will be following Interstate 57 until abeam Sanger Field, and then proceed direct to Chicago Heights VOR. You will then execute the Shore Visual Runway 36 approach into Chicago Meigs Field. After filling out our flight plan in Appendix A, and calling the Flight Service Station (FSS) to file it, we need to turn to Appendix B and locate the sectional map for Chicago. Find Kankakee Airport and Chicago Meigs Field. Draw the above route on the map. Now answer these questions.
** a) About a minute or two prior to reaching abeam Sanger Field, you bypass a tower whose elevation is how many feet mean sea level (MSL)?____________________________________________(15 pts)
** b) What airport, to the east, should you see as you proceed to Meigs Field from Chicago Heights?__________________________(15 pts)
** c) What is the name of the Airport Radar Service Area (ARSA) that's to your left as you fly inbound to Meigs Field?__________________(15 pts)
