Flights of 13MIKE
by Fred J. Calfior and Douglas W. Miller
Flight Scenario Four |
Torrance to Avalon |
(Los Angeles Area - estimated flying time 30 minutes)
I don't hear the phone ringing, so I guess you didn't bust the TCA and no one has called me, Professor Miller, to complain about "13MIKE" wandering all over the sky. The last flight of the series takes you to wonderful Catalina Island, the land of romance and Buffalo Burgers. The approach to this airport is tricky, so stay alert, and do not be late on your power reductions or you may find yourself in trouble. If you just landed at Torrance, and you have talked Professor Calfior into joining you for a Buffalo Burger at the restaurant in Avalon, then you may skip the "SETUP" section and proceed to the "PREFLIGHT". If this is your first flight with "13MIKE" let me tell you how we do the setup. I will lead you through the initial setup phase of the flight simulator where you will set the aircraft type, winds, and position. I will show you how to save this setup so you may return to the Santa Monica Airport without going through the initial setup steps. I will then turn you over to Professor Calfior who will take you through the PREFLIGHT of "13MIKE" to set your instruments, TAXI, and perform a RUN UP of the engine prior to takeoff. He will instruct you in the TAKEOFF, CLIMB OUT, LEVEL OFF, COURSE CHANGES, DESCENT, APPROACH, and LANDING procedures that make up the bulk of this scenario. Please listen to what Professor Calfior has to say about flying techniques. He is trying to help you obtain the best possible score.
FLIGHT PLAN -
This flight begins with a departure from runway 29L at Torrance Airport, with a straight out departure climbing to 3500 feet. You will intercept the LOS ANGELES VOR 170 radial, and turn left to track outbound. After intercepting the SANTA CATALINA VOR 330 radial, you will perform a left turn to track inbound on that radial. Upon reaching five DME from the VOR, you will turn towards the airport and overfly the runway to enter a left downwind for runway 22. You will fly a standard left hand traffic pattern for landing at Avalon Airport. The aircraft will be low on fuel if you have flown the entire series of flights, so take your plane over to the refueling station and fill it up. After filling out our flight plan in Appendix A, and calling the Flight Service Station (FSS) to file it, we need to turn to Appendix B, and locate the sectional map for Los Angeles. Find Torrance and Avalon (on Catalina Island) airports. Draw the above route on the map. Now answer these questions.
