Flights of 13MIKE
by Fred J. Calfior and Douglas W. Miller
Flight Scenario One |
Riverside to La Verne |
(Los Angeles Area - estimated flying time 30 minutes)
Professor Miller here! Let me tell you about the first flight scenario. It departs Riverside Airport in the eastern portion of the Los Angeles Basin and arrives at La Verne Airport (Brackett Field) in the northern Los Angeles Basin. I will lead you through the initial setup phase of the flight simulator where you will set the aircraft type, winds, and position. I will show you how to save this setup so you may return to the Riverside Airport without going through the initial setup again. I will then turn you over to Professor Calfior, who will take you through the PREFLIGHT of "13MIKE" to set your instruments, TAXI, and perform a RUN UP of the engine prior to takeoff. He will instruct you in the TAKEOFF, CLIMB OUT, LEVEL OFF, COURSE CHANGES, DESCENT, APPROACH, and LANDING procedures that make up the bulk of this scenario. Remember to listen to what Professor Calfior has to say about flying techniques. He is trying to help you obtain the best possible score.
Let's look at our route of flight for this scenario. It has some interesting instrument procedures and an unusual approach.
FLIGHT PLAN -
The flight begins with a departure from runway 9 at Riverside Airport, with a climb out to 4500 feet. After departure you will be turning to a heading of 256 to intercept the POMONA 164 radial. You will be tracking inbound on the 164 radial, and performing a step descent to set up for a right downwind approach to La Verne's 26R (right) runway. Wow! A step down approach with a fly over of the runway. Sounds exciting! After filling out our flight plan in Appendix A, and calling the Flight Service Station (FSS) to file it, we need to turn to Appendix B, and locate the sectional map for Los Angeles. Find the Riverside and La Verne airports. Read the route of flight carefully and draw the route on the map. After you have finished drawing your route, answer the following questions. You may want to double check your route to be sure it is correct or you will lose these points.
** a) As you travel from East to West, what VOR do you pass?

** b) While heading West, what airport is just to your left?

** c) What VOR is just south of La Verne?
